Everyone knows what the distinctive curves and lines of Frank Gehry's buildings look like. But where do they come from? Gehry has described drawing as his way of thinking aloud; Gehry Draws traces that thinking through 29 major projects, providing a privileged view of the creative practice of a master architect. More than 360 drawings (most of which are previously unpublished) and more than 400 additional illustrations chart the evolution of Gehry's images from marks on the page to three-dimensional models to completed buildings. Horst Bredekamp's introduction relates Gehry's drawing methods to the concept of disegno, as practised by Leonardo and Durer - not only the act of drawing and modelling, but also the dynamics of creative thinking. Gehry himself describes his method for Bredekamp in several explanatory sketches, and Bredekamp applies this to a study of drawings made for specific Gehry commissions. Virtual-reality filmmaker Rene Daadler and writer Mark Rappolt return this discussion to the twenty-first century, looking at, among other things, analog methods in the digital world of contemporary architecture. Gehry Draws is produced in collaboration with Frank Gehry and his team at Gehry Partners. Project synopses and commentary by Gehry and two of his Partners and Project Designers, Edwin Chan and Craig Webb, guide us through the full range of Gehry production, from the small details of window design to such large-scale undertakings as the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. The drawings, illustrations and text in Gehry Draws definitively place drawing at the heart of Frank Gehry's creative processes. Price: £35.00

For a long time now, the emphasis of radical architecture has rested on the challenge of designing homes in towns and cities and the focus of building in the coutryside has been the conservation, conversion and renovation of existing structures. But now, as more and more people grow tired of the stresses of city living, many have set out for the countryside, taking with them a powerful design consciousness. This book explores the architects who are reinventing the country house and creating new rural architecture for the 21st century. After charting the development of the genre, Bradbury examines 30 case studies that show how architects have taken both modern and traditional approaches to reinventing the country house. The variety, energy and originality of these houses are startling and each shows a fresh, flexible and ergonomic way of living in the surrounding landscape. Price: £30.00

John Pawson is the foremost proponent of a minimal aesthetic in architecture and design. Already known to designers for his ascetic yet luxurious interiors, he has attained public acclaim for his high-profile retail projects such as the Calvin Klein flagship store in New York, his celebrity clients like Martha Stewart and his book Minimum.
This book looks at the spatial themes that preoccupy John Pawsons work through a close examination of a range of different projects. It examines how light, mass and structure inform the architecture, the role of ritual and order, as well as the integration of internal and external spaces. Six new projects, When Objects Work, Calvin Klein Paris, Vacherin Constantin, the marketmuseum, a private house in Germany and the Novy Dvur monastery are featured. There are eight essays on the effect of the work by Deyan Sudjic, Sam Hecht, Michael Craig-Martin, Phoebe Greenwood, Robert Winder, Kate Bucknell, Bruce Chatwin and Father Samuel. Like John Pawson Works, this book is a record of Pawsons developing approach to design and his unique position at the meeting point of art and design, and, through that, it offers much wider insights into culture, society and architecture. Will Alsop is one of the most exciting British architects working today, responsible for such striking buildings as Le Grand Bleu in Marseilles, the Ferry Terminal in Hamburg and, most recently, the Sterling Prize-winning Peckham Library in south London. In 2000 he was one of only four architects representing British architecture at the Venice Biennale. This book, the second of two volumes on his work, covers the period from 1991 to the present. Created in close cooperation with the architect, the book is lavishly illustrated with sketches, paintings, plans and photographs from Alsop's own archives. Kenneth Powell's text analyses the work and ideas, as well as providing a useful biographical context. Price: £60.00

Asymptote, an award-winning New York City-based architectural firm, expands the boundaries of traditional practice with work that ranges from buildings and urban design to computer-generated environments. Recognized internationally as both cutting-edge architects and virtual-reality artists, Asymptote partners Lise Anne Couture and Hani Rashid have designed and written the first book to document their 'real world' (as opposed to virtual) projects completed since 1995. It includes work as diverse as a trading floor for the New York Stock Exchange; a multimedia research park in Kyoto, Japan; a modular furniture system for Knoll; and a centre for art and technology for the Guggenheim Museum in Soho, New York.
Rashid and Couture's work is intriguing because it draws inspiration from a wide range of sources not traditionally associated with architecture - among them the design of airline interiors, sporting equipment, and organic systems like seashells and honeycombs; and various means of communicating and disseminating information. Asymptote presents a seamless trajectory of projects organized in a non-linear fashion and illustrated with installation photographs, collaged photographs, and computer-generated diagrams and environments. The projects are interspersed with descriptive text and the speculative writing that Asymptote is known for.
Both partners combine architectural practice with teaching, Rashid at Columbia University and Couture at Columbia and Parsons School of Design. Price: £35.00
