Ned Sublette and Lawrence Weiner

Book Works 2005

Audio CD 36 minutes

14 x 12.5 cm

Remixed Water brings together a tall Texan, a bearded artist from New York, and with artists and musicians from Belfast, London, Glasgow and San Francisco.

This new CD is remixed from two of Ned Sublette & Lawrence Weiner collaborative albums, Monsters from the Deep (1997) and Ships at Sea, Sailors and Shoes (1993). Generously supported by Weiner and Sublette, eight tracks have been selected and reconfigured by invited contemporary artists and musicians, re-staging and manipulating Weiner's lyrics within the musical genres of two-step, west coast laptop electronica, noisecore, math rock and hard house, to produce a Frankenstein's monster of eclipsed origins.

Remixers include: Bonnie Camplin, Steven Claydon, Erotic Ghosts of Vietnam, Filariahead, Luke Fowler & Daniel Padden, Sutekh, Tussle and Christopher Willits.

Vibro: No. 2 Winter 2004: The Broken Tales Issue
Bi-annual

Welcome to vibrö 2. While editing the new sampler, we felt there was a vital lead between the works; a lurking fragmentation of the narrative, more obvious when the tracks overtly borrow from films (Scanner, RadioMentale), refer to radio plays (Alejandra et Aeron, William Furlong) or sample travel diaries (Aki Onda, Globi) . In this instance, 'Broken Tales' also deals with the challenged formats of composition (Ryoji Ikeda, _ER__A_D_A_G_E_, Michel Guillet, Jopo Stereo) and new functions of the voice trapped by the machine (Goran Vejvoda, Serge Comte).

Vibro: The tuO-edisnI Issue
Vibro: The tuO-edisnI Issue
No.1 bi-annual

The act of listening, as John Cage pointed out, is in fact an act of composing. The starting point for this first Vibrö compilation, The Inside-Out Issue, is the place where listening and composing intersect. To listen to these 12 pieces is to follow clues and reach conclusions, respond and react, receive and transmit. We start outside and wind up inside.

Dinahbird's "SuperEgo" is a meditation on megalomania, which is itself a kind of megalomania on her part and ours. Chris Watson's "unidentified birds" sound like talented robot musicians imitating birds. Mika Vainio's needle arriving at the end of a record will bring many of us back to our own auditory awakenings.

At some point during all this listening and composing, we're likely to uncover a new idea or two. Which brings us back to John Cage, who said, "I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones." -Randall Koral

Includes works by

Dinahbird, Chris Watson, Project Dark, Alex Hamburger, Remedios Ayala + Paco Balbuena, Frederick Galiay, Mika Vainio, Vincent Epplay, Cela Etant, Loris Greaud, David Toop, Trio Cutty Sark

Dia Center for the Arts 2001

Time was intensifying to the point of becoming alarming, but primarily I was interested in seeing how far it would go. By 1901 I had found that a 10 inch disc playing for three minutes was better for most types of popular music, even popular songs, and the popular 'single' was born. As for myself: I was a lump of thinking ice. I thought of myself as a statue carved from a block of ice and this mad hallucination made me proud with an intense pleasure that is truly secret........

Aerial Riverseries
Aerial Riverseries
Frank Bretschneider on Olafur Eliasson

Whatness 2001

Audio CD

Eliasson: The experience of composition is, I believe, a matter of cultivation. As much as the senses and perception are linked with memory and recognition, our relation to composition, space or even colour is closely derived from our cultural habitat.

Bretschneider: The "Riverseries" seemed somehow to fit with my approach to music. I was fascinated, in particular, by the filigree structures, the colour contrasts and nuances. The photographs then seemed very artificial to me, almost digital, in spite of the archaic landscape. I never actually perceived them as landscape images, probably because of the unfamiliar perspective.

Music for William Forsythe
Music for William Forsythe

Whatness 2001

Audio CD

They compose music for what is arguably the world's best ballet company, utterly devoid of all false conservatism. Time and again, Ballett Frankfurt has rolled back frontiers in the way we look at classical dance. This new slant of seeing ballet with a detached gaze corresponds directly to the music of Ekkehard Ehlers, Sebastian Meissner and Thom Wilhelms, which calls for a whole new way of listening. Dancers do not dance "to" the music they hear. Music guides the eye, hovering freely like dance, in an incorporeal perception that functions focus by focus, rather than note by note. Within this panorama, Willems, Meissner and Ehlers have created a vast musical range as broad and as deep as an "aural vision" of the world can be.

Mein Kopf verlor ein Dach
Mein Kopf verlor ein Dach
Marc Ushmi meets Reverend Galloway on Ernst Busch

Whatness 2000

Audio CD

As part of their campaign for the 1928 Reichstag elections, the German Social Democratic Party SPD handed out pieces of soap imprinted with the words "Vote SPD". It spawned the "Soap Song" which audiences never tired of requesting from the singer, actor and later communist Ernst Busch. Whatness asked Stephen Galloway, one of the most scintillating figures in the German pop scene, to interpret the famous workers' revolutionary songs of Ernst Busch. Marcus Schmickler set about compiling this CD on the basis of those recordings. "On Ernst Busch" opens up a new dimension in polit-funk with a blend of exhilarating techno and house tracks based on Mr. Galloway's absurd cultural achievement. This CD pays homage to Ernst Busch and begs the question of how to interpret a text one does not understand.
