Gernes was born in Copenhagen in 1925. In 1961, along with the art historian Troels Andersen he founded Esk-skolen (Experimental Art School) and together with his students, Per Kirkeby among them, he experimented with new modes of expression such as happenings, 8mm films and environments.
In the 1960s, influenced by Pop and Minimal Art, Gernes produced a series of pictures that appeared to be industrially produced but were actually handmade. In the 1970s he stopped producing classical, transportable art works and started producing architectural colour schemes for more than 80 building interiors.
Until recently little has been known about Gernes outside of Denmark as he rejected the international art scene and this catalogue, published alongside his first retrospective, offers a long overdue look at this artists work.

Tracey Emin, one of the best-known contemporary British artists, has become a potent symbol of the relationship between art and celebrity in our time.
Her now notorious installation My Bed was denounced by conservative critics as a scandal, but this and her other works have continued to attract ever larger audiences. Whether storming out of live television debates, talking about her abortions or modelling evening gowns for Vivienne Westwood, Tracey Emin makes headlines.
Yet if Emin is now universally recognized as a media phenomenon, her work has also begun to attract serious critical attention. In The Art of Tracey Emin distinguished critics address her achievement in depth for the first time, tracing Emins influences from Egon Schiele to Bruce Nauman and establishing her place in a wider tradition. They show that however raw and personal her work may seem to be, it actually represents a carefully mediated response to vital issues in culture and society.

On January 7 1894, WKL Dickson tested the worlds first motion picture camera - the Kinetograph, an assistant, one Frederic P. Ott, took his place on the stage and sneezed. The paradox of this recording is that it shows no sneeze, the droplets and globules of Otts explosion were too fast, too many or too small. Having eluded the Kinetograph, the sneeze has spent more than a century in representational limbo. In this book, Lawrence Norfolk and Neal White have reconstructed this missing sneeze. Since her groundbreaking photographic documentary series in the early 1980¹s of the great and the good in British society, Karen Knorr continues to explore with wit and humour ideas that underpin heritage and patrimony in the formation of national identity. In Sanctuary and Spirits, her recent photographic series taken in private palaces and public collections, she explores the boundaries between animals and humans in a world that hasbecome relentlessly materialistic and unconcerned with the implications ofunlimited consumerism. Genii Loci presents a comprehensive overview of this influential artist¹s work over the last ten years, including new developments using sound, installation and video.
